The initiative promotes collaboration across the most promising areas of research, including immune intervention, beta-cell replacement, regenerative medicine, and strategies to prevent the onset of the disease. By combining expertise from around the world, the Quest aims to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into therapies that can preserve or restore insulin-producing beta cells and improve the lives of people with type 1 diabetes.
As an internationally recognized clinician-scientist, Professor Mathieu brings decades of expertise in type 1 diabetes, immunology, and clinical trials. Her work has consistently focused on improving outcomes for people living with diabetes while advancing research that addresses the underlying causes of the disease. She has also contributed to defining what constitutes a true cure for type 1 diabetes, helping shape the global research agenda.
Her involvement in the Quest to Cure Type 1 Diabetes reflects the ongoing commitment of the Leuven Diabetes Lab and its international partners to drive innovation, foster collaboration, and move closer to a future in which type 1 diabetes can be prevented and ultimately cured.
