🎓 Congratulations, Dr. Giulietti! On the successful defense of the PhD thesis “Monocytes and macrophages: Emerging role in diabetes and targets for vitamin D.” This important work was carried out under the supervision of Chantal Mathieu (promoter) and Annemieke Verstuyf (co-promoter, Clinical and Experimental Endocrinology, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium). The jury was chaired by Jan Ceuppens (Experimental Immunology, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium), with further contributions from Kristina Casteels (Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium), Peter Vandenberghe (Laboratory for Genetics of Malignant Disorders, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium), Frans Schuit (Gene Expression Unit, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium), and Annete Ziegler (Institute of Diabetes Research, Helmholtz Munich, German Center for Environmental Health, Munich, Germany).

PhD Research Summary - Dr. Giulietti

Diabetes mellitus affects around 7% of the global population and remains a major public health concern due to complications such as blindness, amputations, and heart disease.

This thesis explored the role of immune cells, specifically monocytes and macrophages, in diabetes, as well as the impact of vitamin D. Findings showed that monocytes and macrophages contribute to disease through their inflammatory activity in patients, while vitamin D emerged as an important environmental factor influencing diabetes development.
