Chantal Mathieu received the prestigious Inbev-Baillet-Latour Prize for her pioneering research on type 1 diabetes.

Her work focuses on how insulin-producing cells are killed by the immune system and how this process might be prevented. Recently, her team achieved a breakthrough with an oral therapy using genetically modified bacteria, which restored insulin production in 60% of treated mice.

The €75,000 prize will support further research, including upcoming patient trials.

On the French-speaking side, the prize was awarded to Laurence Boon and Miikka Vikkula (UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) for their work on vascular abnormalities.
