Chantal Mathieu Honored with Career Award 2024 for Science Communication

Prof. Dr. Chantal Mathieu has been awarded the Career Award for Science Communication by KVAB (Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts) for her sustained efforts to inform the general public about type 1 diabetes, particularly the risk factors, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease. The jury appreciated the clarity and comprehensibility of her communication.

Chantal Mathieu employs various communication channels and strategies depending on the target audience, ranging from professionals such as scientists, clinicians, and general practitioners to the general public. She succeeds in explaining the complexity of type 1 diabetes in an accessible manner and translating scientific insights and results for a broad audience.

For nearly thirty years, Chantal Mathieu has been actively involved with the Flemish Diabetes Association (Diabetes Liga vzw) and has taken numerous initiatives to give diabetes a 'face' in various media. she is the founder of the Hippo & Friends Type 1 Diabetes Fund (www.hippoandfriends.com/en). Prof. Dr. Mathieu's achievements include not only her scientific publications or her innovations in care but also her relentless commitment to giving a voice to diabetes patients and raising public awareness about the role of vitamin D in preventing diabetes. She is a source of inspiration and a role model for future generations of doctors and researchers.
